These genial luscious beings that vary in size from unilateral organisms to giant seaweed are beneficial to the skin. My introduction to algae was about fifteen years ago when I started to study and experiment with macrobiotic food, because of my health problems. I still consume them regularly, and I love spirulina, which contains proteins, minerals, vitamins A, B, D and E and folic acid, which is why I am adding it to morning smoothie. I can imagine not being excited eating that smelly sea-grass, but trust me when prepared the right way it is finger licking good.
Algae are rich in vitamins and minerals, rejuvenate and detoxify, and products containing them contain water on the skin and are excellent antioxidants. The popular algae, the Irish moss, contains protein, vitamins A and B, sugar, starch, Fe, Na, P, Mg, Cu and Ca, all useful sources of perfect care, as well as carrageenan that serves as a cosmetic emulsifier. Algae can absorb more useful substances from the media they are in, and they act anti-inflammatory and reduce fever. They clean, tone and soothe the skin and regenerate the tissues, providing a new vitality and a youthful look. They improve circulation and have a positive effect on areas that accumulate fat and are used to strengthen the skin and regulate cellulite. These beings also protect against UV radiation because they have been developing mechanisms for protecting their DNA for millions of years on the surface of the sea.
In cosmetics, algae extracts can be used in two ways: as a preparation agent (stabilizer or emulsifier) or as a therapeutic agent. Algae extracts integrated in cosmetics are recommended for increasing cellular dynamics and cell regeneration. Algae concentrates, when used in gel or lotion emulsions, are ideal as regeneration and anti-aging treatments, tired skin stimulation after sun exposure, and cellular reorganization in chemical piles and microdermabrasion. It has been discovered that coben, an active element in algae, is responsible for reducing and regulating melanin production. Therefore, a wide range of bleaching products is based on this miraculous ingredient that reduces skin's coloration and lightens hyperpigmentation stains. Though the allegations that algae can prevent the appearance of wrinkles, even wipe them out, completely unfounded, the next time you enliven a layer of glittery algae in the sea, remember that swimming in them can still do stunning things for your skin.
